FAQ
VPSs are based on the concept of partitions on mainframes that allow dozens of divisions to run multiple applications on the same server with advanced resource scheduling. VPSs advance the concepts of the mainframe with dynamic fair-sharing of system resources on commodity operating systems and hardware. VPSs behave exactly like an isolated stand-alone server. Hosting businesses sell hundreds of thousands of VPSs as Virtuozzo Virtual Private Servers (VPS). With Virtuozzo VPS, a hosting service provider can offer a hosting service that is more powerful than shared and easier to manage than a dedicated server.
...Virtual Private Servers are the most advanced step in server virtualization technology. They are used to partition a single physical server into many (as many as 1000) isolated virtual private servers. Each virtual private server looks and behaves exactly like a real networked server system, complete with its own set of init scripts, users, processes, filesystems, etc
Each VPS...
Appears to have its own processes, users, files and provides full root access
Each has its own IP addresses, port numbers, tables, filtering and routing rules
Each could have its own configuration files for the system and app software
Each could have its own versions of system libraries or modify existing ones
Each could delete, add, modify any file, including files in /root, and install its own application software or custom configure/modify root application software |
From a remote connection, you cannot tell a VPS from a dedicated server. While a shared hosting account only allows you access to your specific files and directories, a VPS gives you full root system access. You can install your own software, you can run WHM instead of just CPanel and manage Resellers and much much more. You get a guaranteed minimum amount of system resources instead of just plain sharing resources on a shared account. There is no comparison between shared/virtual hosting and VPS. VPS is inbetween a shared hosting account and a dedicated server. Those upgrading from a shared account will benefit. Those moving from a dedicated server will notice less performance. VPS is not designed to be a solution for those who are utilizing a fair amount of resources on a dedicated server already. Moving from a dedicated server to VPS is moving backwards because you are going from having 100% of the hardware/resources on a server to sharing the resources with others. However, moving from a shared account to a dedicated is a step up as you gain more resources to utilize and you get full root access to your own OS shell.
The only difference between VPS and dedicated hosting is that in dedicated hosting you have an entire server, its hardware and resources, physically to yourself. With VPS, you are sharing the hardware with a few other VPS accounts thereby reducing the cost but also taking a step backwards in performance as you do not have 100% of the resources. Also, you cannot compile your own kernel on VPS and must use the installed kernel because the kernel has much of how a VPS operates compiled in and thereofore other kernels will not work. DiLisp must caution those utilizing a signifigant amount of resources already on a dedicated server that VPS is probably not for you. It is designed for those moving up from shared hosting but not quite ready for dedicated yet. Remotely a dedicated and a VPS account look and function the same.
It varies from 10 to 30 based on the level of account you have. The more expensive accounts have less per server.
At this time we are installing Fedora or RedHat 9.
At this time we are installing Cpanel/WHM, Plesk 7, or Webmin/Usermin.
Yes but there is no price reduction for not using a control panel.
You can upgrade at any time to a higher level VPS package which includes more ram, cpu, IP's and hard drive space. However, we do not support upgrading only ram or cpu or hard drive or transfer by themselves. Upgrading only requires a quick reboot and you dont lose any of your data or have any long downtime.
